Reporting tonight from Mamdani's election party for the Associated Press: what Mamdani’s rise says about the Democratic Party, the socialist movement, and the future of City Hall.
Your reporting from the scene was exciting and genuine. Mamdani’s campaign was a masterpiece and he’s very dynamic and charismatic. One of his strongest supporters is Lina Kahn, Biden’s FTC Commissioner and gifted antitrust enforcer. Business competition resulting from that enforcement is the antithesis of socialism. The Oligarch inauguration box seats represent their investment and Trumps acceptance of gold plated consolidation through monopolization. That is socialism minus government ownership. (Another example is the Sports Leagues owners and their monopolization of a multibillion dollar product.) So Mamdani really isn’t a socialist though he advocates more government participation in the local economy of NYC and Trump and his pals are capitalists in name only and resistant to true competition.
I'm hoping that Democrats can figure out a message of change that doesn't hide from what Mamdani represents. A growing proportion of America is in some ways American by accident, and that contributes to the sense of disillusion among voters. FYI, Mamdani's interview in Vanity Fair is a must read. Regarding affordability, apartment company Cortland's settlement with DOJ to stop rent fixing has definitely led to them cutting back on maintenance, but if I were a voter in NYC, I would still give rent control a chance.
Have an amazing time!

DEMOCRATIC Socialist

He's a pioneer. Not going to be easy. Most of his political opponents are sucking at the corporatist teat.
Tara, your energy’s contagious! Cheers from Argentina — I’m toasting this awesome victory for democracy!”
