I turned down a seat at Washington’s most exclusive table and chose a memorial instead. What that decision says about power, access, and the stories we tell ourselves this weekend.
In my profession, I always needed to go to the equivalent of these events with tuxedos etc. I have a photo album of my shots of the dinner rolls that i took at each event to remind me how tedious and unspecial each event was.
I get the feeling that the thought process for reporters is this: “I know that I shouldn’t go to the Correspondence Dinner….(insert whiny voices)…but it is just SO special and fun!!!!”
Everyone makes choices in life and I am glad Tara made the right choice. These self important events (add Met Gala or Oscars) look just as ridiculous to the general public as the President going to the wrestling matches while a war is on. People need to have some self awareness.
you and your fellow colleagues shining on this soulless clown car of craven criminals, felons, and lickspittles are professionals and journalists committed to honoring your calling to endure 'just another performance' by the asshat-in-chief.
It’s probably a Tara Palmeri-specific sign to be taken notice of that the memorial was scheduled on the same day as the dinner, there are lots of these you run into along the way. Correct decision 😊. Of course there’s also the chance that the Trump presidency goes down in flames right there on stage and you miss it, but doing the right thing > FOMO I reckon.
Excellent decision Tara, which I know you didn’t make lightly. Additionally, there is no point in celebrating the DEATH of modern day journalism.
Moreover, this is exactly what Trump is bringing to America—a media owned and operated by his cronies; either white washing the news, or ignoring it outright—out of sight, out of mind!
Not to mention, Trump will use his bully pulpit at the Whitehouse Correspondents Dinner to denigrate the press—creating another distraction away from his failed policies and hare-brained war! And this is precisely the point—focus on the fake media, not the actual truth, facts and policies.
Bottom line, why give this deprived, sinister sociopath another opportunity to change the subject—it doesn’t compute! IMHO…:)
Wow yep you made the right decision! I know Virginia would be proud that you’re continuing to honor her memory and keep carrying her voice & story forward!
The annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner is scheduled for this weekend. Given confluence of the attacks by Trump on freedom of the press + the imposition of censorship of anything he does not like + the financial looting of media companies for self-enrichment, this event should be boycotted by ALL press.
Boycotts and pushbacks work. Look at the ratings of CBS since authoritarian control.
Any media attending should inherently be deemed aligned with the suppression of our fundamental, constitutional rights by this regime and they must be cognizant of the potential ramifications of their attendance in the form of boycotts and pushbacks.
Hm? Grindr, a adult social media app with one owner in Singapore and the other in Beijing. Where upper class perverts can order sex meat like uber eats?
Your decision and the thought process behind it is why I love being a paid member Tara. I don’t know many other ways to spend tomorrow night better than by attending a memorial service and reminding the public why this years WHCD should be boycotted.
All Journalists should be skipping this event. An attack on journalists is an attack on me.
Good move. Why debase yourself attending a dinner for a 2 bit chiseler?
could you imagine if C-Span panned to me?!

Dinner rolls do day a lot about the main course. Is it an embellishment or a dough ball? A compliment or bass bait?
2 things…a) you’re safe with fatso b) or, your middle finger might start twitching, involuntarily?

Very happy to hear this, Tara. Any legitimate journalist should not be anywhere near this event!

Thank you. Courage of conviction is a rare commodity in D.C.
Good for you Tara , it must be nice to not be beholden to any corporation. Free to roam.

Kiddos to you Tara!

I don't know how any journalist with a conscience could attend. Thank you Tara!
DINNER WITH TRUMP?
Probably the quickest way to lose your appetite!
