Welcome back to The Red Letter

For me, the Epstein story has always exposed just how much in our country is truly broken — a broken justice system, a broken government, a broken society, and so many broken lives.

That’s why we called the podcast I hosted and investigated alongside an all-star team of journalists, Broken: Jeffrey Epstein.

But I keep coming back to the idea of broken promises, and the hope that Virginia Giuffre held onto for something more. I know I’ve said this before, but she was genuinely hopeful. She wouldn’t have traveled the country with me, knocking on doors, if she didn’t believe that one of them would eventually open… that someone would help her piece her broken life back together, by openly testifying to what the depravities that they both witnessed.

Those are her words to Epstein’s former chef, the celebrity chef Adam Perry Lang, who’s pals with Jimmy Kimmel and has appeared on Oprah. Virginia left a handwritten note for him at his restaurant, APL, begging him for help.

She wrote:

“You can stand by me and with us, Adam. Please, please, please understand: you could help put together some of the missing pieces of my broken life. You can help me on my pursuit of justice.”

Keep reading to hear what happened after that note — and who else Virginia believed might finally bring her justice.
