I don't see this as a political liability for Republicans. Their goal is to keep the Senate so that Trump isn't removed if impeached. That means doing whatever those for whom this is the most important issue want them to do.
Also anything that occupies attention to distract from Epstein is a win. Epstein is the only thing that Trump is afraid of....well maybe other than Putin and Mossad.
The infrequent voters and normies are likely to make voting decisions based on pocketbook, not this. I'm not aware of any election where the party blamed for a bad economy won.

Tara, I'd love to change the way these surveys are done. I dont' think they tell us the whole picture. For example I have several relatives who don't believe me when I tell them what Ice have been doing. They would be in the category of Not Enough or Just About Right. They really don't know what is going on but think they do.
I know several people who have relatives that are illegal immigrants who also don't believe that ICE is going after regular immigrants that are "Not criminals".
A better set of questions to ask would be things like
Should ICE be able to go door to door and arrest anyone who they think is illegal?
If that person has papers or a drivers license, would it still be ok for them to be arrested?
Should they be allowed to wear full face masks
Should they be allowed to be in unmarked cars
Should they have a badge or identification?
Shoudl they be allowed to shoot protesters with a gun, pepper spray, etc (each a question)
Probably several more questions like this.
Then ask if they are aware of and give a list of things ice has been accused of doing
Then find out after all of this if they think ice is doing too much, not enough or just right?
Thanks Tara: If Jan 6, 2021 was a day of love for Trump , I can hardly wait for Trumps re-calibration . How does he improve the deplorable actions of his personal ICE gestapo force. Maybe he will get Stephen Miller to tell them to tone it down a tad. The protests crowds will still be there.
Or... what is happening is intentional and right out of the fascist playbook. For instance, Stephen Miller is already referring to peaceful protesters as insurrectionists. Next, invoke the Insurrection Act, and then cancel the elections.

They are arresting the wrong people.
The cruelty is unnecessary.
Arrest those who hire undocumented workers, and the “problem” would disappear overnight, if you believe it is a problem at all.
