Deep inside the Justice Department, Congresswoman Madeleine Dean was being watched.
There is a special kind of humiliation reserved for members of Congress who want something the executive branch does not want to give them, and it involves waiting. Madeleine Dean, a Pennsylvania Democrat and a lawyer by training, has been waiting for months.
Trump. That was the subject line of the email she wanted to see.
Behind it, Dean believed, was something acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s Justice Department did not want the country to see, or possibly the president, to have to explain.
The man looking over her shoulder was Blanche’s minder… His role today, however, was to monitor which redacted files from the Epstein Files vault were able to be viewed by the congresswoman.
“They are very strict on what you can and cannot do when you’re on the computer,” Dean recalled to me.
“Leave your phone outside, iPad outside, and there is a minder in the room.”
After weeks of back and forth, she was granted access to a terminal, with two of acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s minders and a technician to read one of the most revelatory documents in the Epstein files. It is an email forwarded to Ghislaine Maxwell from Epstein’s lawyer, subject line: “Trump.”
The contents of the email are blacked out with a box. But Dean — a fiery Democrat who showed up to a House Appropriations hearing with Virginia Giuffre’s book Nobody’s Girl in hand — went deep into the Department of Justice armed only with a pen and a binder, while two of Todd Blanche’s minders looked over her shoulder.
