I’m going to watch the 11” video later today. But I have to say this: that is a giant red flag. If she thinks she is ready for office in her head but then can’t pass the test in real life, then she is clearly not fit for office yet. Maybe she needs to grow up a bit more.
I'm curious to hear what you think. I thought I was pretty straightforward and she could have said there are some things I can't say because it's an ongoing legal matter but this is how it's affecting my life, campaign. this is what it means etc
You really wanted her to be worried about going to jail and she made it clear she wasn't going to discuss the specifics and was confident she would win. You showed what appeared to be evidence she was guilty. For her to get into specifics would be ill advised, as she already informed you, so she is not in a position to refute it. The two of you clearly have different views on protests and civil disobedience. She is not just a candidate, she is a defendant. As a defendant she made the right choice
I watched the section where she was still present 3 times. I did not get any sense that you were being aggressive, demeaning, no "gotcha" questions, etc. You were asking about her reality. So, when she disappeared, I was shocked - even though I knew in advance that she left.
My original conclusions are even more clear now: her abrupt departure is a sign of immaturity and she has not learned how to talk with people who challenge her in any way.
Something else that came to mind was the role that ICE plays in this. They have an entire team that comes along and cleans up the actual scene (if needed), creates the narrative that puts them in a good light always that they then put out to the public, and that will alter video or destroy it if it doesn't help their narrative. They basically lie a lot and all the time.
The significance for her is that she thinks she is going to win, and she might. However, she needs to consider that people disappear or get charged multiple times by this regime. The regime is ramping up to deport anyone that it thinks doesn't support it, and is rapidly becoming less about one's legal status. This makes her a bulls eye for them.
Resiliency is really important to surviving this life and no one gets resiliency "muscles" by avoiding people who make them uncomfortable. I hope she can reflect on this moment and make better choices going forward.
Wow. I was a fan of Kat. Just donated yesterday, actually. To me, the indictment is a path to election victory (standing up to ICE, the administration - it shows who she is). I was concerned at first when you read the charges but the video you aired showed that she was doing....nothing wrong. She did nothing but stand in the way of an ICE vehicle. I mean...whatevs. Leaving after the exchange with you is weird. You didn't ask hard questions. I'm unsettled by it.
Sometimes it is more important to be a smart defendant, than a politician. After Kat informed her that she can't talk specifics, something Tara with her experience should realize, Tara showed what appeared to be incriminating evidence which Kat cannot refute without getting into specifics. She was smart to bail but could have done it more gracefully. I doubt Tara intended to put her position where she couldn't defend herself but that's what happened
We didn't see the entire video (and even that may not tell the real story of what she may/may not have done). If she's got other things going for her, I hope she takes advantage of this experience in order to learn how to better handle herself. The WAY she moves on from this interview could work either for OR against her..
It seemed clear to me that Kat was completely stressed out about a FEDERAL indictment with 8 years in prison. She said she would plead not guilty and present the evidence in court, which is completely appropriate when you're up against prosecutors who can destroy your life.
Great job--I agree with the positive reviews of Tara--an actual, tested, tough but compassionate independent journalist. As with Kate Porter, Platner, and in my opinion other younger social media forward candidates, I don't discount their futures as a candidate but the facts show they are not ready. Very foolish on Kat's part, and too young. Go Tara!!! I've told a number of friends that in competitive primaries, Katie Porter showing her arrogant and nasty side and Platner's issues--you will not win.
If Ms Abughazaleh, can't handle questions from you, she's not even remotely prepared for politics in the world of grass, concrete, rainy days, ...., and in-person interactions with corporate media reporters, let alone constituents."
Also, physical acts of violence like banging on and vandalizing official vehicles, as well as, entrapping personnel in their vehicles -- are crimes. Full stop.
Those of us who have participated in civil disobedience know the stark red line between peaceful manifestations of protest and violent actions.
I agree! I saw the video and thought that too. They needed to stand aside, and if they wouldn't, then be prepared to be arrested. But if you bang on the vehicle, etc., as you said, that's not true peaceful civil disobedience. That said, it seems like the charges against Kat and the others with her in the crowd are a bit draconian. As well. she was physically abused by an officer several times recently, and IMO could bring a charge of police brutality against them. What a mess we're in.
Were you there? I don't think so. I've seen more of the same video elsewhere anyway. And what was the justification for the crowd banging on the ICE vehicle? I get their anger for sure, but banging on the vehicle was not a smart move. Maybe read my other comments here where I defend Kat and the other protesters. Besides Kat could defend herself by saying she couldn't say more about the details, or something along those lines, but she decided to bow out instead. It's okay really, imo, sometimes interviews don't go as planned. Kat is very young. But if she wants to run for office, she needs to be prepared for potentially tough questions. It comes with the territory.
I'm not the one pretending I know what happened. That was you based on a clip
Watch again. Kat had just told Tara she couldn't discuss specifics and then Tara played a video that looked incriminating even though Kat couldn't defend herself by discussing it
I hope this young woman has other things going for her and is simply very green at handling interviews. It's definitely a plus that she obviously cares about her community and is fearless in putting herself out there in order to make a good point; we don't see that every day in our politicians.. On the other hand, getting oneself out of answering a fairly easy question like the one that spooked her, should be fairly easy - if coached properly. If she regroups, I also hope she actually contacts you, Tara, to simply apologize. THAT would show TRUE mettle and character!
Tara, I think you have overreacted a bit. If I were Kat's lawyer, I'd have advised her not to discuss at all the incident resulting in her indictment. Anyone - at any age - who's been indicted by a federal prosecutor is more than a little freaked out by the experience. I'm sure she was following closely the instructions of her lawyer (likely per a script they'd worked out) in order to protect her Constitutional rights. She shouldn't talk about that incident since it caused her to be criminally accused. I believe that after a few basically identical questions you asked her about the incident she felt you were interested in nothing else, weren't accepting her answer regarding her need to protect herself, and out of frustration she quit the interview. Yes, she could have handled that better by trying to transition the conversation in another direction. She's done other interviews and done them well. Perhaps questions to her about ICE in Illinois generally and her campaign would have yielded a much better interview.
Unimpressed with you. She politely answered your questions 3 times with the same response indicating that she was not interested in disclosing any more information on the specifics. She was not at all hostile, she thanked you before signing off. She has to protect her interests in a federal court case. Instead of taking the cue to move on you presented a gotcha type video to further implicate that you felt she was guilty of something. Then you have the audacity to equate a young woman's efforts to protect herself from the full arsenal of the DOJ with a claim of an attack against the free press in our nation. Repugnant.
She had been thrown to the ground several times by the ICE people. She was protesting as were many others in Illinois. You chose to talk only about the specifics of the allegations of the case and continued after she undoubtedly had been advised by counsel not to talk about the case itself. She no doubt felt you weren’t interested in anything else.
I live in the 9th district. I’ve met her twice in small groups. The Democratic machine is pushing other mainstream candidates. I won’t judge her by one bad interview. She’s fierce. She Won’t take pac money and that appeals to me. The front runner is taking big donations and PAC money. She’s running a close second in a very crowded field. The D party does not take kindly to upstarts. Hope she returns and tries again with the interview.
I’m a lifelong boomer democrat and I’m so disappointed in my party now. I’m ready to give the “immature” and unpolished newcomers like her a chance. They have a lot to say and we better listen.
Thank you, Tara! “Without fear or favor” - much gratitude to you for your commitment to independent journalism. The American public is fortunate you continue to stand firm. We are standing with you!

Seems her handlers have her on a tight leash...
You mean lawyers, as they should
Wow. I was a fan of Kat. Just donated yesterday, actually. To me, the indictment is a path to election victory (standing up to ICE, the administration - it shows who she is). it was strange. I wanted to keep going with an interview and talk about why she's running but you have to ask about the breaking news!
Sometimes it is more important to be a smart defendant, than a politician. yes, we shall see. I think the indictment will help her campaign
You did a great job as always, Tara. . She proved she isn't a serious candidate to run for congress.
thanks Marlin. I try my best
You always do Tara!
It seemed clear to me that Kat was completely stressed out about a FEDERAL indictment with 8 years in prison. She said she would plead not guilty and present the evidence in court, which is completely appropriate when you're up against prosecutors who can destroy your life.
that's totally fair, then just say that.

What was indictment, was Porter refusing to answer about?
Bullshit charges. We support you Kat!
Wow! Surprised by her signing off like that. I really liked her on Jim Acosta's show. I don't think you were out of line.
thanks, I was genuinely surprised too
Kat is amazing. Please support her!

You do not know the context of the video. What was happening a minute before.
Tara showed the video after Kat said she wouldn't be able to discuss specifics, meaning she couldn't defend herself
Were you there? I don't think so. I've seen more of the same video elsewhere anyway. And what was the justification for the crowd banging on the ICE vehicle? You're just being argumentative. What's the point? Anyway, I'm done wasting time on a troublemaker.
Have a nice day

doubtful, but i think she'll still have a bright future ahead

You can't reasonably expect her to talk about the case. Come on, this is pretty disappointing. Not Kat, but YOU. Do better.
She had been thrown to the ground several times by the ICE people. She was protesting as were many others in Illinois.
